Though Banana is not technically a tree, yet it is considered one because of its structure and size .Offering prayers to the Banana tree is something which has been carried out since time immemorial. Since life cannot exist without trees, as a symbol of gratitude and gratification it is planted during Vaisakha, Magha or Kartika Shukla Chaturdashi as a tradition. It is said that worshipping the tree with flowers, fruits, etc. assures the welfare of the family . In the same manner, it is said that a person who cannot offer any Dakshina to a guru is advised to give a few Banana fruits in the place of cash or gifts. At the time of Grihapravesa, marriage and other functions in the house, people usually keep two Banana plants on each side of the entrance as an auspicious symbol.

Almost each part of the tree is used for some or the other purpose in every field. For instance, the leaf is the most sacred portion and would find its usage in all Vedic rituals. It is also considered to be the holiest plate to have meals on, which is why even today many south Indians  serves their food on Banana leaves.
